people they stare at me

Been really digging the new free EP from Jacksonville, FL based unouomedude (you-know-you-owe-me-dude). We've played his standout track, "Buildings" on our show before, and we're also loving the final track on his EP, "Happy Birthday." You can get his Marsh EP for free at his bandcamp. There are also a few tracks available for download on his last.fm page. If that's not enough for you, head over to his immaculately designed (but sometimes slow-to-load) website. He's not playing live shows yet, but here's hoping that he takes his blissed-out, glowing, beat-driven tracks on the road soon.

Johnny Whopper episode 5

01. TV Girl - If You Want It
02. Botany - Waterparker
03. Spook Houses - In the Library
04. Dinosaur Jr. - Kracked
05. Porcelain Raft - Tip of Your Tongue
06. Tropical Punk - Summer on the Rocks
07. Big Troubles - Video Rock
08. Big Star - Thank You Friends
09. Happy New Year - Hotel
10. Paperfangs - The Vastest Plains

I wasn't here this week due to some prior commitments, so all of the above are Knox's selections. And I see he took the opportunity to play Big Star again. I do enjoy those tracks by Botany and Happy New Year though. And you can't go wrong with Dinosaur Jr.

2) Dreaming- Seapony
3) Easy- Fiveng
4) The Vast Structure of Recollection- Mark McGuire
5) Tip of Your Tongue- Porcelain Raft
6) Never Come Around- La Sera
7) Reservoir #3- Real Estate

9) In the Library- Spook Houses
10) On Land- TV Girl
11) Western Wood- The Liberty Belles
12) Birthday Party- Unouomedude
13) Georgia- Big Troubles
14) Summer on the Rocks- Tropical Punk
15) Waterparker- Botany
16) On a Journey- Wet Wings
17) Take Me Home or I Die Alone- Dead Gaze
"Dreaming" by Seapony is a great little lo-fi track. Seapony hails from Seattle, WA and this track contains catchy guitar hooks over nice girl vocals. Head on over to Double Denim Records to pre-order a copy of the 7", which the first 150 copies will be sold on clear seafoam vinyl.

"Take Me Home or I Die Alone" by Dead Gaze is a swampy psychedelic jam from Mississippi boy, Cole Furlow. This track is significantly different than his earlier stuff as Dead Gaze churns out even muggier tunes with creeping melodies. The single is dropping in late November on Fire Talk.

Johnny Whopper episode 4

01. Balum - Camila
02. Women - Eyesore
03. Two Bicycles - The Holy Forest/Forever
04. La Sera - Never Come Around
05. Seapony - Dreaming
06. Real Estate - Reservoir #3
07. unouomedude - Buildings
08. Mark McGuire - Brain Storm (for Erin)
09. Perfume Genius - Mr. Peterson
10. Pepepiano - Bruce Springsteen
11. Sufjan Stevens - I Walked
12. Jay Reatard - Wounded
13. COOLRUNNINGS - Burnout
14. Squinch Owl - When I Woke Up

I mentioned a few websites on the show which I have linked up here, and I also added one to La Sera, which is the solo project of Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls. This is probably my favorite show so far - I loved Knox’s tracks from La Sera, Sufjan, and Seapony, as well as my own from unouomedude, Squinch Owl, and Mark McGuire.

UPDATE: COOLRUNNINGS made The Awl’s list of awfully-named bands at CMJ.

Johnny Whopper episode 3

01. The War on Drugs - Baby Missiles
02. Kurt Vile - Beach on the Moon
03. Twin Shadow - Castles in the Snow
04. Still Corners - Endless Summer
05. Guards - Don't Wake the Dead
06. Memory Screen - Chester
07. Wet Wings - Running Like a Man
08. Big Star - Thank You Friends
09. Balam Acab - See Birds (Moon)
10. Belle and Sebastian - The Fox in the Snow
11. Sam Quinn - Oceans
12. Dead Gaze - This Big World

So we definitely had a few pitchers of Stella before this show, which would explain the Big Star, the Belle & Sebastian, and the fact that I used the phrase "stone cold classic" to describe both of those tracks. Nevertheless, we're upstanding guys, and we stand by our selections, in particular Dead Gaze, which we played last week & who is one of our current favorite up-and-comers.

Johnny Whopper episode 2

01. Neil Young - Walk With Me
02. Psychic TV - The Orchids
03. Blue Hawaii - Lilac
04. Mountain Man - Loon Song
05. Fiveng - Easy
06. Dead Gaze - Take Me Home or I Die Alone
07. Sea Pinks - Japanese Knotweed
08. Blackhawks - Sunday Morning
09. Christmas Island - Black Cloud
10. Deerhunter - Basement Scene
11. Alasdair Roberts - The Daemon Lover
12. C V L T S - RADD PITT
13. Welcome Back Sailors - I’ll Be There
14. Pears - Mossel Bay
15. Low - Sunshine
16. Julian Lynch - Still Racing

Knox had some killer selections this time around - the Blue Hawaii, Fiveng and Dead Gaze tracks all slayed. My picks were more understated compared to Knox’s noise-pop bombast but I stand by them, especially Blackhawks, who legitimately rule, and Neil Young, whose new album is fire.

A little more on Sea Pinks, whom I was pretty tongue-tied about: they’re on CASS/FLICK and are related to Girls Names somehow. They share a member or something, yadda yadda, who blogs about it at BEACH COMBER.
